here and there // nakako hayashi
There is something sweet and pure inside the pages of here and there magazine, something that we haven’t seen inside a fashion/culture magazine in a long time. The pages aren’t filled with re-worked press releases or hyped bands, nor are they lined with images of distastefully shot fashion accessories. The ‘author’ Nakako Hayashi blends high culture with urban domesticity to create an honest and original periodical. Artists like Susan Cianciolo construct installations inside Nakako’s home, Elein Fleiss documents trees in Paris and writers muse on everything from life as a new parent to why people make gardens. Bi-lingual [Japanese/English] here and there is available direct or through Nieves. Issue #07 will be out soon.
Nakako contributes to Purple, Purple Journal, Tokion Japan and is also a mother.

Conor O’Brien // Westside
Each of Conor O’Brien’s photographs are individually appealing but when displayed as series they become more than the sum of their parts. Carefully composed but never contrived his images are personal but never self-indulgent and have a narrative formed through contrasts of intimacy and toughness, honesty and mystery, the mundane and the magical. His exhibition ‘Westside’ opens tonight at Utopian Slumps in Collingwood, in between preparation for the exhibition and earning the dollar, he took some time to chat to us more broadly about his work. Pacman Fossil // Le Gentil Garcon
There’s some genius stuff floating around the web today such as this fossilised Pacman who is rumoured to have become extinct around Level 5 BC. Produced by Le Gentil Garcon and featured on It’s Nice That.

Mike Mills // Blonde Redhead
Born from the MTV generation, there is a group of creatively agile directors such as Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry who have continued to produce cult-films. Another example, Mike Mills, has also been prominent and established himself not just as a feature director but also as someone who is constantly prepared to shape-shift to accommodate his creative desires.
Take a look at these five music videos that Mills concocted for Blonde Redhead over at ANP Quarterly. They all possess the same brilliant ability to simply communicate complexity.

Nienke Klunder // Sequences
This year Nienke Klunde was selected by Getty Images as one of the ‘New Photographers of 2007′. Frequently placing herself as both subject and photographer her images are usually constructed within series that explore transformation and identity. The above images are taken from the beginning of her work titled ‘Sequence 3′, ‘Sequence 4′, ‘Sequence 5′ and tell stories that are cinematic in their appearance and resemble Carver, Leroy and Lynch in their content. Currently working between London and Barcelona Nienke has exhibited in Europe, New York and Tokyo and has featured in magazines such as Pol Oxygen and Colors.
