If you go to Olaf Breuning’s homepage you will be greeted with an exercise in web non-interactivity, an astounding feat of domain naming and registration, as well as photography that lures you in through its combination of colour, composition and silliness. Both with illustration and props his photographs remind us of how very few changes to a scene can affect the potential for absurdity and intrigue. If you’re in reality, in particular in Sydney’s reality, Olaf Breuning also currently has an exhibition running from March 2 - April 14 at the ACP which draws upon this ‘glam-trash’ world that we seem to inhabit and love. It runs alongside other exhibitions from Ed and Deanna Templeton, and Glenn Sloggett. Click here for more details.

Words // Thomas Jeppe (speaking with Japanther’s Ian Vanek)
I first saw Japanther in 2004. Their performance changed what I thought about live music, about band and audience interaction, and about what music can do when it is approached and practiced as an all-encompassing art project. After the show, Ian Vanek, drummer of the band, was outside the venue talking with kids propped on the sidewalk, friendly and forthcoming. It was a stark contrast to the violence, both literal and figurative, of the gig that ended moments before. There was a sense of camaraderie between Japanther and the kids in the pit that seemed to materialise so suddenly; most of the crowd was seeing this foreign band for the first time, with little or no prior contact with their music. But it jelled.

Those that have checked out NowNow since its relaunch will no doubt know that Kim Jones is coming to Melbourne for a runway show of his S/S 07 collection on March 5th to be hosted on the Curtin House Rooftop. To celebrate this event Taschen are kindly giving away a copy of the wonderful Fashion Now 2 - which we have asked Kim to sign - to one lucky NowNow reader. Fashion Now 2 showcases over 160 designers from Marc Jacobs to Karen Walker, Kim Jones to Karl Lagerfeld and has mix of everything including high-end, street-wear and sportswear. Also, with an introduction by i-D founder and Editor-In-Chief Terry Jones, alongside interviews, Q&As and essays on fashion issues this publication isn’t just for the highly superficial. Read more about the publication here and to be in the running for the Kim Jones signed copy email winnerbaby@nownow.com.au with the subject heading Fashion Now(Now!) 2.

It started so peacefully but it would be foolish to suggest that the pinata didn’t see it coming. DAMP’s It’s a World full of Hurt exhibition at Utopian Slumps - the new art space in Collingwood - finishes this Sunday. Everyone gets to choose their weapon and gets up to two hits each. There might not be much left to destroy but it’s worth checking out anyway for both the remnants of the installation and for the gallery itself.
