A relic of the 80s and the bane of the 90s (double denim) the sleeved denim jacket never really quite cut the mustard. However once you tear off the sleeves, it’s a completely different story. ‘If You Send Me to Heaven Better Be in Denim’ will exhibit artwork by great Melbourne tattooists and graffiti artists on the symbolic canvas of the sleeveless denim jacket.

“Inconsistency is my very essence”, says the wheel, “rise up on my spokes if you like, but don’t complain when you are cast back down into the depths. Good times pass away, but then so do the bad. Mutability is our tragedy, but it is also our hope. The worst of times, like the best, are always passing away”. 24 Hour Party People

Inherently linked to ideas of fate and fortune telling, in the past Tarot cards have also been used by cyclists as spoke cards for identification in alley cat races. Spoke asked 22 artists to re-interpret one tarot card each drawn at random from a bike helmet.

Japan has a curious culture which maintains a constant tension between the traditional and the modern. As a collective, Kamon Design translate the ancient Japanese art of Kamon – symbols of time past derived from patterns in nature – into modern design.

Keiichi Tanaami, Masaru Ishiura, Namaiki, Marok and Naohiro Ukawa have exhibited at creative spaces worldwide, such as Berlin’s Circle Culture Gallery, Pret a Porter Paris, Tokyo’s Mori Arts Centre and Paul Smith’s London boutique. Exhibiting for the first time in Australia Via Alley will host 16 unique artworks in two rounds (see below) as well as showcasing and selling Kamon Design(ed) books, tees and scarves as well.

Exhibition Dates:
November 15 - December 14, Keiichi Tanaami x Masaru Ishiura
December 14 - January 11, Namaiki x Marok x Naohiro Ukawa.

Trailers Not Trash // MIFF

It’s the night before MIFFmas and if you haven’t been through the festival guide, or read the ThreeThousand special edition, you probably don’t even have a wishlist yet. For those that might need a little bit of audio/visual stimulation we have selected five trailers from the programme that you can watch and imagine that they were 1000 times bigger and at least 25 times as long. If that doesn’t get you excited then this quote from movie star Edison Chen about Dog Bite Dog just might. “This movie is a pop out movie, either pop out and make mad loot, or pop out and have mad cult cred, this is one of the proudest movies I have ever done”.
